Makeup Review: Maybelline Moist Matte BB Cream

BB cream, or blemish balm cream, is the first ever skin makeup I wore. BB creams are known to target unwanted spots caused by acne, sun exposure, and irritated skin, among others, while giving the skin a healthy look. However, as I age, I came to realize that I should take the extra step in taking care of my skin. Applying sunscreen is a must in anybody’s skincare routine as suggested by dermatologists. It is advised to apply sunscreen everyday whether you’re out under the sun or just indoors to fight against skin damage caused by the sun’s harmful rays. Hence, it has always been a challenge to find a makeup that wouldn’t fade the minute it’s applied while giving healthy skin benefits. Is the new Maybelline Moist Matte BB cream the answer to my prayers?

A few months ago, a not-so-new BB cream was released in the beauty market – Maybelline Moist Matte BB Cream. It claims to be the next generation BB cream that leaves skin shine-free but never dry. In addition, it has a high coverage formula infused with matte pigments and beauty essence, where its moisture-locking technology lasts up to 8 hours. Hence, it gives a pore-less and fresh finish look. Also, it has SPF 24 PA++ and it has a lightweight mousse texture that melts right into the skin without the greasy feeling. It also claims to be suitable for oily and acne-prone skin.

The PAO of the Moist Matte BB Cream is not indicated on its packaging, but since it is a liquid product, it could last from 1-2 years. It is available in BeautyMNL and Lazada for Php 399.00. It’s really interesting that Maybelline named its BB cream with two contrasting features it claims to be– moist and matte. Hence, If you want to know more if this product was able to live up to its claims, keep on reading!

Makeup Breakdown

Packaging

The Moist Matte BB Cream has a box packaging which has Japanese translation, yet it says that it is made in China. The packaging indicates that it is non-comedogenic, suitable for sensitive skin, and dermatologist-tested. It comes in a squeezy tube and it’s fairly easy to control and dispense the product. I like how travel-friendly it is considering that it contain 30 ml of product.

Shade:

Sadly, this BB Cream has only two shades: 01 Natural and 02 Medium. I have a medium-olive skin tone with yellow undertone and 01 Natural works well for me. I realized that the BB Cream was able to adapt to my complexion after applying and blending it.

Smell:

This BB Cream has a strong scent to it and it immediately made me think it’s because of its SPF content. However, the smell doesn’t linger for so long.

Application:

According to its site, this is how it is advised to apply the Moist Matte BB Cream:

Take an appropriate amount on the fingertip, put on 5 points of both cheeks, nose and chin in small portions. Afterwards, apply evenly to entire face and blend with fingertips.

In my case, I just dotted the product on the center part of my face and blended it outwards right after. I found that it was very easy to blend this product. Also, there’s no need to use tools like brush or makeup sponge. I achieved a medium-full coverage even just with the use of my fingertips.

Performance:

  • Upon application (9 AM)

Upon application, the Maybelline Moist Matte BB Cream did not go well on the dry patches on my chin and above my lips. Also, it highlighted the uneven texture of my nose.

  • 3 hours after application (12 NN)

After 3 hours, the BB cream was already able to mix with my complexion and with the natural oil of my face. However, it was not able to fully cover my blemishes.

  • 6 hours after application (3 PM)

The BB cream looked more and more natural as time goes by.

Verdict: I don’t recommend this product!

Claims:

  • Leaves skin shine-free but never dry

The look that this BB cream leaves is a healthy kind of glow, hence it still appears to be a bit shiny, or dewy. It was not able to help moisturize the dry patches of my face. I don’t think it would be favorable to those with oily skin type as it would make the face even more oily.

  • High coverage formula

I disagree that this BB cream has a high coverage formula because it was not able to hide the blemishes that I have. I’d consider its coverage as light.

  • Moisturized, pore-less and fresh finish look up to 8 hours

I don’t think that this product helped to moisturize my dry skin. Also, based from my experience with this product, I was only looking fresh until the 4th to 5th hour mark considering that I didn’t even sweat that much. I don’t think it would reach 8 hours while giving a fresh finish look, unless it is touched up.

  • Formula melts right into the skin without the greasy feeling

I agree! It’s very easy to blend the product right into the skin. However, it is important to note that upon application, the product would seem light. After some time, it would eventually blend with your complexion.
