Survival Mode: My Honest Guide to First Trimester Symptoms

The first trimester is a complete whirlwind of emotions. Beyond the initial excitement, it’s an incredibly anxious stage especially for us. Since we found out we were pregnant just before the fourth week, we faced a grueling two-week wait until our 6th-week ultrasound to finally see the baby. During that time, the first trimester symptoms truly began to take center stage. I’ve read repeatedly that the body is literally building an entire organ, the placenta, from scratch, a feat often compared to running a marathon while sitting on the couch. I was honestly looking forward to that famous ‘pregnancy glow’ almost every mom seems to talk about, but little did I know, the exhaustion was just the beginning; soon, my body began to change in ways I didn’t expect, from the ‘progesterone bloat’ to those frequent bathroom breaks.

THE BIG FIVE: My Most Evident First Trimester Symptoms

While I spent a lot of time anticipating morning sickness, my body decided to push aside the nausea and go straight for every other symptom on the list. I also get asked constantly about my cravings, but honestly? I just find myself missing foods I haven’t tasted in a while, and once I have a bite, the “need” is gone.

If you’re feeling like a stranger in your own skin right now, know that you aren’t alone! Here is what my Big Five first trimester symptoms actually looked like:

1. The All-Day Bloated Phase

Starting around week four, I hit a phase of intense, heavy bloating. It wasn’t just feeling full; it was a constant, aching pressure that made me feel like I was carrying around tons of weight that I had no idea how to get out of my body.

This happens because higher progesterone levels relax the muscles in your intestines to allow the uterus to expand, which unfortunately slows down digestion and builds up gas. It became so uncomfortable that I eventually consulted my OBGYN, who prescribed some safe gas relief. During this phase, my jeans became my worst enemy, while t-shirt dresses were an absolute lifesaver for my comfort (and my sanity!).

2. The First Trimester Fog

There were moments during the day when I felt like I could just pass out and sleep for hours, even if I had just woken up! I noticed my stamina completely vanished; walking distances that used to be easy now felt unbearable and left me breathless. I found myself constantly scanning for a place to sit down whenever we were out.

The most frustrating part? This “need-for-sleep” phase was often mixed with pregnancy insomnia. Being exhausted but unable to sleep is a special kind of first-trimester hurdle!

3. The Midnight (and Mid-Day) Bathroom Runs

“Wait, didn’t I just go five minutes ago?” became my daily thought. Between the increased blood volume making my kidneys work overtime and the growing uterus starting to press on my bladder, the urge was constant.

I’m also making sure to stay hydrated (I aim for at least three refills of my 24oz Owala tumbler), which definitely adds to the frequency!

Pro-Tip: I read that leaning forward while urinating helps ensure the bladder empties completely. It really works! Even though it’s annoying, I’m just thankful to my kidneys for working so hard to support this journey.

4. The “Eat Now” Urgency

I’ve never been much of a “snacker,” but pregnancy changed the rules. Now, my body demands food every 2–3 hours. The hunger hits like lightning – instant, intense, and urgent. It’s as if my body doesn’t give me time to even think about what I want; I just need to eat right now.

I learned very quickly to keep emergency snacks ready at all times. My go-to’s are:

  • Boiled eggs (paired with kimchi – the best!)
  • Bread with various spreads
  • Yogurt and fresh fruits
  • Crackers and biscuits
  • Oatmeal

5. The Underwire Retirement

Just days after that positive test, my breasts became incredibly sensitive. Even the spray of the shower or applying lotion felt like too much. It made finding a comfortable sleeping position nearly impossible. I quickly realized I couldn’t bear the restriction of my old underwire bras anymore. I’ve officially packed them away and just used my seamless, wireless bras, which are the only things providing comfort right now.


THE SIDE CHARACTERS: Other First Trimester Symptoms I Experienced

While the Big Five took up most of my energy, there were a few other symptoms that made an appearance. They weren’t constant, but they were definitely part of my first trimester journey:

The Moderate Hiccups

  • The Restless Lower Back: My lower back started to feel constantly restless, like it desperately needed a good stretch or a crack. (Though I’ve learned to be extra careful with how I stretch now!)
  • The Mango Meltdown: I’m not usually one for cravings, but thanks to my social media feed being full of mangoes, I became obsessed. One time, I actually cried because we couldn’t find any! Beyond the mango incident, it’s mostly just been a deep “need” to taste foods I haven’t had in a while. Once I get a bite, the craving is satisfied.
    • Note: My OBGYN advised me to be careful about non-food cravings (like detergent or paper), which can be a sign of a condition called Pica. Always check with your doctor!
  • Heightened Intimacy: I was surprised to find a significant surge in my desire for intimacy. While many stories talk about being too tired for romance, I experienced the opposite—an increased drive and a closer connection with my husband.
  • Emotional Rollercoaster: My emotions have always moved quickly, but now the pace has doubled. I can go from zero to a hundred in seconds!
  • The Sensitive Nose: I can pinpoint a smell from across the house now. Unfortunately, this “superpower” also triggers my nausea.

The Mild Quirks

  • Skin & Hair Shifts: I traded my usual skin for a bit of “pregnancy acne” on my neck and back, and my skin feels much drier. On the plus side? My hair has never looked better—it’s growing fast, shiny, and super healthy!
  • The Heartburn Lesson: I learned the hard way that spicy food and (too much) hotpot are now my enemies. I never had heartburn before, but that “fire in the chest” is something I hope to never feel again.
  • The Anxiety is Next Level: Before bed, I often find myself drowning in clouded thoughts. It’s a lot to process, and the nighttime anxiety is real.
  • Bodily Growing Pains: From mild abdominal muscle pains to bleeding gums while brushing, it’s clear my body is working overtime. I even noticed a few more spider veins on my legs due to the extra circulation.
  • The Random Body Aches: I’ve had occasional headaches (temples and back of the head), some leg cramps, and one memorable moment of cramping at the mall that made it hard to walk for a minute.

Pro-Tips for My “Side Character” First Trimester Symptoms

1. The “Hands-Off” Skin Policy

Your skin is much more sensitive right now, so please, learn from my mistakes: Stick to pregnancy-safe skincare and do not pick at your pimples. I’ve been struggling with pregnancy acne on my neck and back, and because I couldn’t resist picking, I’m now dealing with post-acne marks that take much longer to heal than they used to. Treat your skin with extra kindness. Gentle cleansers and lots of moisture are your best friends!

2. Finding Your Nausea Cure

My OBGYN gave me the best advice: Identify your triggers and stop them immediately. Since triggers vary for everyone, pay close attention to what sets you off. For many, a “palate cleanser” is the secret to stopping a wave of nausea.

  • The Sour Trick: Many moms find relief in lemon water or keeping sour candies nearby.
  • My Personal Lifesaver: For me, a few sips of Coke was the only thing that consistently settled my stomach and kept me from vomiting. It’s all about finding that one thing that works for you.

3. Taming the Nighttime Anxiety

If you find yourself lying awake with clouded thoughts and a racing mind, try a “Brain Dump.” I started keeping a journal by my bed, and writing down everything—from my worries to my to-do lists—before I go to sleep has been a game-changer. It’s like hitting a “save and close” button on my brain for the night.

Finding the Grace

The first trimester is often called “survival mode” for a reason. It is a season of extreme highs and lows—from the emotional rush of realizing your 2026 goal to be a mom is coming true, to the physical reality of feeling like a stranger in your own skin.

Between the lightning-fast hunger, the progesterone pooch, and the exhaustion that feels like a literal marathon, it’s a lot for one body to handle. I’ve learned that the best thing I can do is listen to my body, honor the naps, and keep the Coke and kimchi-eggs ready at all times. If you are in the thick of it right now, please give yourself some grace. Your body is doing something miraculous, even on the days you feel anything but “miraculous.”
