The Story of How We Found Out We’re Pregnant

Usually, my body gives me very clear signals that it’s that time of the month. However, this time? Silence. There were no pre-menstrual cramps, headaches – nothing. Also, I found myself constantly checking for that dark, vertical line on my abdomen called the linea nigra. In my defense, it was plain curiosity. One time, after dinner, there was really a loud voice inside my head telling me I should take the pregnancy test. I think it was my intuition speaking, or maybe it’s me just having a feeling about it, or maybe I was just assuming. I didn’t realize it then, but those three signs were my first steps into motherhood. These were the quiet nudges that led to the story of how we found out we’re pregnant.

The Reveal: Three Minutes That Changed Everything

After we finished dinner, my husband started on the dishes while I finally gave in to that nagging voice in my head. Without telling him my plan, I slipped into the bathroom to take the test. Then, the waiting began. I sat there for what felt like the longest three minutes of my life. Honestly, I wasn’t even sure what I expected; I simply needed the clarity to stop overthinking.

Suddenly, two lines appeared. Even though the second line looked faint, it was unmistakably there.

Instantly, a wave of shock hit me, and panic began to creep in. I rushed back to the kitchen and asked my husband if he was finished with the chores. When he said he wasn’t, I insisted he stop mid-way and follow me into the bathroom immediately. He followed me, completely clueless, until I held up the test. He froze, just as stunned as I was. For a long moment, we stood there in a speechless daze, trying to process our new reality. Eventually, the tears came, and we shared a long, soothing hug. In that moment, the silence said everything: we were in this parenting journey together.

How We Confirmed Our Pregnancy After a Faint Line

Despite the two lines, we were in disbelief for quite some time. We immediately searched the internet for articles about pregnancy test accuracy, searching for any reason to doubt the result. I discovered that I needed an “early detection” test since I hadn’t officially missed my period yet. Because of this, we decided I should take another test the following morning once my husband purchased that specific pregnancy test kit.

When morning finally arrived, I took the second test. This time, the second line appeared much clearer. Although traces of shock still lingered in our silence, we began to accept our new reality. However, I suggested one final check: I would wait for my period to officially pass and then take a third test.

The next day came, and my period never arrived.

So I took the final test the day after, and there was no longer any room for doubt—the lines appeared as clear as day.

Finding out was a true emotional rollercoaster; I went back and forth from being stunned, overwhelmed, amused, to frightened. It was a vulnerable time, but at the end of it all, I was grateful. This might not be the ‘ideal’ story of how we found out we’re pregnant, but it’s the one I’ll cherish forever. After waiting such a long time for this chapter to begin, I can finally say the words: it’s actually happening.

Advice for the Disbelief Phase

Finding out you’re pregnant is a such a huge emotional shift. If you are feeling overwhelmed, here is how to navigate those first few days:

  • Trust your intuition, but use the right tools: While your “gut feeling” is powerful, always confirm it with the right tools. Use an early detection test if you haven’t missed your period yet, as these kits are specifically designed to detect lower levels of hCG.
  • Test with your first morning urine: For the clearest results, take the test immediately after you wake up. Your urine is most concentrated then, making that second line much easier to spot.
  • Step away from (too much) Google: It is easy to spiral into a “research hole” about test accuracy and symptoms. Instead of doom-scrolling, take a deep breath and wait 48 hours before testing again. hCG levels typically double every two days, so the lines will become “clear as day” soon enough.
  • Allow Yourself to Feel Disbelief: Don’t feel guilty if you aren’t “instantly glowing”, or if your reaction isn’t the same as what you’ve seen online. It is perfectly normal to feel shock or panic before the joy kicks in. Everyone responds to situations differently.
  • Lean on Your Partner: Share the “disbelief phase” together. Whether it’s researching articles or going to the drugstore for a second test, doing it as a team makes the reality easier to process.
  • Capture the Moment: Even if the photo is just for you, take a picture of that first faint line. Looking back, you will realize that blurry little test was your very first moment of motherhood.

Quick Tips: What to do Immediately After a Positive Test

Once the initial shock fades, focusing on what you can control helps ground you. Here are the essential first steps I did, which I suggest you to do, while you process the news:

  • Schedule your first OBGYN appointment: Contact your doctor immediately to validate your home test results. Aside from giving you peace of mind, it’s the best way to transition from “guessing” to “knowing.”
  • Begin prenatal supplementation: You don’t have to wait for a prescription to start taking care of your little one. Start taking folic acid right away. I headed straight to the pharmacy for over-the-counter folic acid. It’s a simple daily habit that makes a world of difference for baby’s early development.
  • Audit your diet: Now is the time to brush up on your “Yes” and “No” foods. It honestly felt awful that I have to give up my love for raw food – like oysters, kilawen, steak and a lot more. But let’s be honest, knowing exactly what’s safe to eat makes mealtime way less stressful.
  • Review your skincare routine: Believe it or not, your skincare routine will need a little makeover! Some common ingredients (like Retinol) are a no-go during pregnancy. Do a quick scan of your products now so you can keep that pregnancy glow safely.
