K-Poppin’: Missha Magic Cushion Cover Lasting

Dewy-looking skin, healthy glass-skin, poreless, and ombre lips  – these are just some of the trends that Korean beauty or K-beauty has set. It’s very much influential given that Korean dramas are such big hits in our country. Cushion foundations have evolved throughout the years, and is a favorite because of its additional skincare benefits. Some promise healthy-looking skin, dewy finish, color-correcting, or radiance. There’s also some which promise to give coverage and flawless look through hiding imperfections and dull-looking skin. That’s what the Missha Magic Cushion Cover Lasting SPF50+ PA+++ claims to deliver. The main ingredients are bamboo water which moisturizes and refreshes, baobab fruit extract which hydrates, and Witch Hazel Extract which smoothes. It has silica bead powder which absorbs sweat and sebum to help in the longevity. It retails for 17,000 won from the Missha website which is around P800.00. Also, if you’re planning to get it, it is available on Lazada.

Makeup Breakdown

Packaging:

It comes in a muted blush circle packaging with a paper-y velvet texture on its cover while plastic on its bottom. There’s a lid or cap that separates the cushion puff from the foundation.  It also prevents the foundation from drying up, and I think that it’s for hygienic purposes as well. The Missha Magic Cushion Cover Lasting Foundation weighs 15g and there’s no PAO indicated. There’s also neither an English translation on its packaging nor on the cushion itself.

Shade:

According to Missha’s site, there are only 2 shades available – No. 21 and No. 23. No. 21 is light beige and No. 23 is medium beige. Since I’m a morena with warm olive undertones, I had to choose No. 23. Shade selection is probably the setback of most cushion foundations because of their limited options. It’s understood that these cushion foundations, made in Korea, are targeted to Korean complexion. However, I think that if they wanted inclusion and wider scope of market then they should extend their shade selection. Honestly, No. 23 is a tad bit lighter than my current skintone. What more if I go back to my tan, which I prefer?

Smell:

This cushion foundation from Missha smells like a cleanser that lathers a lot. It smells clean and fresh, and has an aromatic scent to it. The scent lingers for a few hours even after setting it with powder.

Application:

Since it’s my first time to try a cushion foundation, I was hesitant to press my cushion puff on the sponge. I tried first using my finger to test how much I’d pick up and I was taken aback because the sponge was packed with foundation. I ended up using my fingers to get and apply the foundation on my face. Looking back, I think that the reason why I did that is because I didn’t want my cushion puff to absorb a percentage of the foundation. I wanted to make sure that I’m not wasting any product.

The foundation sets easily. I realized that I had to work in sections to make sure that the product is blended easily. The reason behind that could be one of its ingredients, boron powder, which helps in adhering to skin lightly to achieve an even texture without caking. I only needed a little amount to achieve even coverage.

Performance

  • Upon Application (7AM)

I was pretty impressed with how seamless powder blended  on top of this cushion foundation. There were no patchy areas when I applied my blush, bronzer and highlighter. So far, I looked fresh and radiant. I easily achieved an even coverage.

  • 3 hours after application (10AM)

The textures on my nose and the area around it were emphasized a lot. I have also observed that there were areas where the product has creased and congested on the curve of my nostrils and nose tip, plus the surroundings of my nose.

  • 6 hours after application (1PM)

The product did not oxidize. However, I observed that it has lightened a little bit than when I first applied it. The textures were even more emphasized and the caking on my nose became worse. There were some that also sank in my smile/laugh lines.

  • 9 hours after application (4PM)

Excuse my un-fresh face (LOL) but I just woke up from a nap when this photo was taken. My face looks very oily and  the product faded already on the top of my mouth and on the tip of my nose.

Verdict

The Missha Magic Cushion Cover Lasting boasts its skincare benefits such as anti-wrinkle care, whitening and UV protection. I agree to its claim that it has perfect coverage, adheres smoothly and lasts for a long time without oxidizing. The product is recommended for those who are looking for excellent coverage, who wants to cover uneven texture, and to moisturize and refresh skin. Based from my wear test, I was not impressed at all with how it performed on my textures. I have dry to normal skin type, and I’m sure that the cake-y situation that happened around my nose could even get worse for those who have oily skin type. Also, I don’t think that this is built for our humid climate. I have yet to test it out during the summertime. To finish this blog post, I only recommend this to those who have purely dry skin type. If you have textures, then this won’t do you any good.
